Experiencing the evolution of the Internet while growing up in the early 2000s has given me some advantages over older and younger generations. I have thousands of hours worth of family videos from the 80s to the mid aughts that don’t look too different from the content that family vloggers upload to the Internet today. However, none of that material has surfaced on the web because of its contents being trapped on VHS tapes, which are not easily transferred into a digital format. I am in this weird position where I grew up seeing strangers grow up on the Internet, while not having any of my private moments being blasted all over the world. This interest in the private becoming public, how we access each others’ memories through video, has been following me for a long time, and this work is a compromise between posting all of my childhood memories online, and having some kind of privacy left.
