Bellytime_timevortex.png is a video piece that runs 3 minutes and 21 seconds long in which someone scrolls through an Instagram account filled with bellybuttons sourced by the artist from the internet, family and friends. In the age of the internet images no longer have traditional ownership.
In Bellytime_timevortex.png Ivy Lockhart attempts to find a new ethics of image appropriation, attempting to alter the images through reproduction, distortion, reprinting and tasking family members and friends to consensually create their own. The piece is a reflection on the way that female bodies are commodified on the Internet and the politics of consent and image sharing. Additionally, the belly button is our bodies’ only man-made feature; the belly button initially connects us to our mother and sustains us until with a slash of scissors we are simultaneously wounded, abandoned and introduced to the world. Ivy Lockhart attends Tufts and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in the Combined Degree Program (BA/BFA) which is located in Boston, Massachusetts, USA.
