Portfolio call for the alumni from Turku UAS Arts Academy
As a part of KampusART arts programme, an open call for portfolios is opened for alumni from Turku UAS Arts Academy. In the call, we look for works of art to be joined in the art collection of Turku University of Applied Sciences. The call is open from 4 to 31 October 2021.
The alumni include all those who have studied and worked at Turku UAS Arts Academy (incl. alumni from Turku Drawing School or Turku School of Art and Communication).
Surprising details in the call
The works of art acquired through the call for portfolios are to be placed in two stairways (stairways A & B) in different sides of EduCity. Concrete is the dominant material in the staircases. The staircases’ windows are of different sizes, and the window bays are also possible locations for the works of art. The overall atmosphere in the space is dim: there is general lighting in the staircases, and in addition, the amount of natural light coming from the windows varies between times of day and year. The works of art cannot be separately lighted. You can visit the site independently within the opening hours of EduCity. See photos of the staircases here.
We are looking for completed works of art. The artworks’ size, technique and format are optional. Nevertheless, the works of art cannot be wired up. For example, the artwork can be small or consist of several parts, which can be placed near each other or even on different floors.
We hope that the works of art bring interesting and surprising details to the staircases. In relation to the artwork, the viewer is moving, and the angle of looking at the artwork varies from top to bottom and vice versa, and past the artwork.
To guarantee the safety of the staircase users, the artworks cannot prevent passage or narrow the lane width of the exits. The lane width of the exits shall be met at the passage height (2100 mm): at the passage height, the artwork cannot protrude from the wall at all.
The artworks must be attachable to the staircase wall, ceiling or window bay permanently but thus that they can be detached if necessary. The hanging ability of the artwork is the responsibility of the artist. Turku UAS is responsible for the installation/hanging of the artwork according to the artist’s instructions. The artist and the artistic working group of KampusART arts programme will negotiate the final locations of the artworks.
The artwork shall be as maintenance-free as possible. In addition, it must be noted that the artworks will be placed in a public space (e.g., possibility for vandalism).
The artist is responsible for transporting the artwork/entity to EduCity. Turku UAS is responsible for the costs related to transport and insuring the artwork/entity.
3−6 works from different artists / artistic groups will be acquired in the staircases. The price per work of art is EUR 2000−7000 (VAT 0). The total budget of the works of art to be acquired is EUR 21 000 (VAT 0). The artist will invoice Turku UAS for the price of the artwork.

Artwork selections and schedule
The call for portfolios is a part of the KampusART arts programme, which brings art to the indoor and outdoor premises of EduCity on Kupittaa campus. The purpose is that the works of art acquired through the call and the works of art already placed in EduCity constitute a versatile and high-quality entity. The artworks acquired from the alumni will be joined as a part of Turku UAS’ art collection.
The artistic committee of KampusART arts programme will process the portfolios by the end of November. Based on the proposals for acquiring the artworks by the artistic working group, the acquisition decisions of the works of art are made by the steering group of the arts programme by 31 December 2021. The artworks will be hung in EduCity in January–February 2022.
All those who have submitted their portfolio will be contacted once the artworks have been selected and the acquisition decisions have been made.
