Anssi Pulkkinen & Taneli Rautiainen: Meander (with Bicycle Rack)
2020, galvanized steel
The artwork depicts a bicycle rack, boisterously bent into a curve. Its starting point is the area’s dynamic character and location in a hub of different forms of transport.
The title of the artwork, Meander, refers to the line ornament pattern, familiar from ancient architectural tradition, which continues and is repeated as an unbroken ribbon. The endless lines of the bicycle rack form a similar pattern. On the other hand, the name refers directly to the artwork’s form and how it reflects experiencing the urban environment: meandering means wandering, roaming, and rambling.
Tinted with humour, the artwork joins the tradition of modernistic outdoor sculptures. Upon examination, the large and impressive abstract form has been implemented by forging a very common object. At the same time, the artwork stretches the boundaries of the everyday experience.
