Shoji Kato: Kalpa | Bedrock | Fibroin
2020, rose gold on cast silver, aluminum, core sample from Onkalo (Olkiluoto), silk
Along the technological and scientific aspects, this work proposes that our well-being is afforded with innumerable and incomprehensible bodies, both organic and inorganic.
Philosophers, engineers, workers, a bishop, a monstrous goddess, totems, nymphs, silk moths and their larvae, ores and the earth – their bodies and human actions associated with the work’s key materials are tied to the context of this work.
While referring to particular stories (e.g. Mothra and Kalpa) and materials (e.g. bedrock from Onkalo) and fitting into this site, the work invites open narrativity and awaits a new temporality.
