Stig Baumgartner: Weather Observations

The results of the KampusART sketch competition have been published. The aim of the competition was to find ideas for public artworks to be produced in the interior of the new campus building EduCity. The competition was organized by TUAS and Turku Technology Properties. The artistic jury was chaired by Taina Erävaara, the Head of Education and Research in the Fine Arts in Arts Academy.

The proposals included a spectrum of contemporary art

According to the artistic jury, the competition proposals were interesting and reflected different ways of making contemporary art. Some of the artworks emphasized the process and ethics of making contemporary art, as well as sustainable development. The competition proposals included a wide variety of materials, such as stone, textiles, painting and photography. None of the proposals was too bold or impossible to implement, but some of the sketches were incomplete and left a number of open questions for the jury.

For the artistic jury, making a decision of was challenging, and many good proposals were left unselected. The jury strived for a high-quality and diverse artistic entity.

During the sketch competition, a new form of commissioning public art was piloted in cooperation with the Artists’ Association of Finland as the artists had the opportunity to discuss their ideas and competition proposals with Architect Anniina Savisalo. The purpose was to support the artists in making their competition proposals.

All nine proposals submitted to the competition met the requirements set out in the competition programme.
